The last decade has seen France return to the house/disco/electro spotlight in a big way, with a scene that’s bigger than ever and a whole new generation of talents breaking through into the spotlight. Mark Lower is one such hotshot who is on the cusp of ascending into the major leagues with his stunning debut album Mark Lover, an infectious ride through bold melodies, emotive chord sequences and feel-good basslines.
Producing since 2008, Lille-based Lower has slowly refined his sound from his early progressive and electro works to his contemporary offering which has won him so many fans both behind and in front of the decks. After the success of his huge single Bad Boys Cry on Nurvous in 2013, he’s now come good with a full debut album for the New York imprint.
The LP kicks off with the seductive tones of My Luv 4 U, sensual vocoders, slinky bass and guitar licks giving a nod to some of his home country’s most influential producers. Indeed, a real sense of French disco house heritage runs throughout. JazzyFunk lends an anthemic pop vocal to The Love We Share as the album continues, infectious talkbox powers Funk You onwards and Scarlett Quinn shows off her impressive vocal skills on Jamie Antonelli collaboration Shame.
Pared back trancey flavours imbue I Need You with some gently euphoric tingles, JazzyFunk returns to lace the plump bassline of Fight For You and Lower teams up with his original production partner Man Of Goodwill for the huge Never Give Up – a surefire crossover hit contender. Scarlett Quinn delivers a more gentle, honeyed vocal on Saviour, teeing up Ashley Slater to deliver the album’s final vocal on More Than Gold – a wistful affair laced with soft piano chords. Sunset On The Rocks closes the album in beautifully introspective fashion, all subdued Nile Rodgers-esque guitar licks and melancholy melody.
Mark Lover is a highly accomplished debut. Stylistically coherent with slick production, it’s a captivating listen from start to finish and is set to establish Lower’s name as one of the leaders of the new school. Delivering a hit single in the dance world is one thing; following it through with a quality artist album is quite another.
